We spent the day in Sintra and visited the Sintra National Palace, the Pena Park and Pena National Palace and the ruins of the Moorish Castle before returning to Lisbon. Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995

The first interesting building is the municipality building. It looks like a small romantic castle.

Palacio National de Sintra IV
The Sintra National Palace was declared National Monument by decree in June 16th, 1910 and is today one of the most visited monuments in Portugal.
Palacio National de Sintra I
The Sintra National Palace is the best preserved mediaeval Royal Palace in Portugal, having been inhabited more or less continuously at least from the early 15th up to the late 19th century.
Palacio National de Sintra III
The famous twin towers are actually kitchen chimneys, each of them 33m high.
Palacio National de Sintra II
Very likely, the palace was built on the site of the residence of the former Moorish rulers of the region. The main building programs were carried out by King John I, who rebuilt the Palace, and by King Manuel I, wo added the Manuelite wing, giving the Palace its present look.
